How ConnectCareHero built an AI virtual host with GoML to support senior engagement

We worked with ConnectCareHero, a Chicago-based tech company that is solving senior care. The team does so by assisting senior living communities with virtual activities to residents within the community. Its Telepane platform connects residents with live hosts for cooking classes, wellness programs, education sessions and social events. The platform was making a significant impact, however, every session needed a live presenter, and that made regular programming expensive and hard to schedule, especially for smaller communities.

To solve this, GoML built an AI virtual host that can run trivia sessions on its own, using natural voice conversation instead of a live presenter. This virtual host now runs 100% of the trivia sessions on the platform and has cut the need for live presenters on routine activities by more than 80%.

Why ConnectCareHero needed more than live-hosted activities

Senior living communities use structured activities to support cognitive health, encourage social interaction and reduce isolation among residents. ConnectCareHero's entire virtual programming depended on outside presenters for every session, creating scheduling limits and increasing costs for communities with smaller activity budgets. The company wanted an AI virtual assistant that could lead activities independently while delivering a natural and engaging experience for residents.

The idea behind ConnectCareHero goes back to a personal story from the company's CEO Waldo, whose father moved into a Chicago elder care facility later in life. A heartwarming experience inspired the genesis of ConnectCareHero and to create more personalized experiences for every resident.

ConnectCareHero wanted a virtual host that could run trivia sessions through natural voice conversation without a live presenter. It also needed to adjust to each community using demographics, language, cultural background and cognitive conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer's - while keeping session access secure and administration simple for staff.

What was built into ConnectCareHero's AI virtual host

GoML used its Conversational AI blueprint as a part of its AI Matic platform to build a virtual host that acts as a digital activity host for senior communities. It combines an avatar, live voice conversation, secure session handling, personalized trivia content and a suite of AWS infrastructure all in one system.

  • Voice and avatar: The virtual host uses Amazon Nova Sonic for natural voice conversation, paired with an animated avatar with lip sync and real-time expressions, built through character animation for trivia sessions with older adults.
  • Personalization: The virtual host adjusts trivia content to each community's demographics, language preferences, and cultural background, and takes dementia and Alzheimer's information into account when choosing questions.
  • Session management: Administrators use a web dashboard with role-based access and JWT authentication to open sessions, generate shareable links with set expiry, and validate public links, all through temporary WebSocket sessions, without needing resident accounts.
  • Trivia content and analytics: Questions sit in a structured database organized by topic and subtopic, chosen per community, with session history stored in Amazon S3, tracking answers and engagement across each session.
  • Infrastructure: The virtual host runs on Amazon Bedrock with Amazon Nova Sonic, a FastAPI backend, a React administration portal, a PostgreSQL trivia repository, Amazon S3 for assets and history, and WebSocket streaming for voice, all built on AWS.
