Things stand with the Department of War

Anthropic outlines its position in a dispute with the US Department of Defense over military use of AI. The company opposes unrestricted use of its models for surveillance and autonomous weapons.

Anthropic explains its stance in an ongoing conflict with the US Department of Defense about how AI should be used in military systems. The company argues that its models should not be deployed for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons without strict safeguards.

US officials pushed for the right to apply AI technology for any lawful military purpose, which Anthropic refused to accept. This disagreement led the Pentagon to label the company a “supply chain risk” and restrict its technology from defense contracts.

Anthropic says the move sets a dangerous precedent and has challenged the decision through legal action.
