OpenAI has launched a new Trusted Contact feature in ChatGPT focused on improving user safety during mental health emergencies. The optional feature allows adult users to nominate a trusted friend, family member, or caregiver who can receive alerts if ChatGPT detects signs of self-harm or emotional distress.
OpenAI stated that trained reviewers evaluate high-risk situations before any notification is sent, and conversations are not shared with the trusted contact. The company designed the system to balance privacy, transparency, and crisis support while giving users full control over participation.
The update reflects OpenAI’s broader effort to strengthen safety tools and responsible AI usage.
